Parson Christen Dem Pickney Fuss

(EN/The Parson Christens His Child First)

If my 2021 revelation could be resumed in a few words, it would be this Jamaican proverb: Parson christen dem pickney fuss.

A Jamaican proverb (and truism), which translates to, "People look out for their own affairs first", is often used as a warning: it warns us against nepotism, ego-centrism, and the ways of users, emotional anglers, offloaders, freeloaders, etc. - usually in the form of family or friends - who are conveniently absent whenever help or favour is to be returned, yet they are the ones often in need.

However, if viewed positively, this proverb should serve as a reminder that we have the greatest responsibility to ourselves: to take care of our own needs, be they physical or emotional.

Therefore, if in 2022 you find me less available, or that I have set boundaries, understand that I'm christening the child within.

Selah,

Ryo
